41st Anniversary of the Passing
of Elisabeth Kindelmann
April 11, 1985

We are marking the 41st anniversary of the passing of Elisabeth Kindelmann.

Élisabeth Kindelmann, née Szántó, was born at Saint Stephen’s Hospital in Kispest, Hungary, on June 6, 1913. She was baptized on June 13, 1913.

In the posthumous writings of her spiritual director, who died in 1976, we learn that she came from a poor family. Her parents were Joseph Szántó, a printer (1871–1917), and Ersébet Mészáros (1878–1924). Her father was Protestant, her mother Catholic. The children received a Catholic upbringing.

Elisabeth had twelve brothers and sisters, six sets of twins. She alone, the thirteenth child, was not a twin. And she alone reached adulthood. Seven of her siblings were victims of the 1919 Spanish flu. Two died of diphtheria and two in accidents. Another of her brothers died young; Elisabeth does not know the cause of death.

On April 11, 1985, Elisabeth Kindelmann passed away after a long illness, which she bore with patience and was comforted by the Sacrament of the Sick. She was buried in Erd/Ofalu, about twenty-four kilometers southwest of Budapest, on the banks of the Danube. In 2001, Elisabeth’s remains were transferred to the family crypt at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Budapest, which she attended daily.

Before serving as an instrument of the Lord and the Virgin Mary, she had to endure countless trials, which she overcame with rare energy.
